Does my child need help with reading?

Your child may benefit from Language and Literacy services if:

  • Your toddler or preschooler is never interested in looking at books with you
  • As a preschooler or kindergartner, he or she does not enjoy word play such as rhyming
  • He or she has a communication delay or disorder. We recommend that all children with these concerns have their literacy skills screened before entering kindergarten
  • He or she does not know most letter sounds by the end of kindergarten
  • He or she cannot easily sound out simple words by the middle of first grade
  • A teacher has mentioned concerns about reading
  • He or she does not enjoy reading
  • He or she reads books but cannot tell you much about the book
